Lynn Geesaman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1938. She graduated from Wellesley College and began her photography career in 1970 with a series of photographs she took of her children. This led to a photographic project on identical twins separated at birth; Geesaman herself is a twin. By the 1980s, she began to photograph structured landscapes, while at the same time perfecting the printing technique that distinguishes her work.

Geesaman quickly gained national recognitions for her striking black and white photographs. Void of people, her images reveal the solitude and refinement found in nature. Her pictures vibrate with light; these are quiet places where our only disturbance is the occasional rustle of leaves, or the sounds of our own thoughts.

Gardens and landscapes in Europe and the United States have been the subjects of her photographs for the past fifteen years. Geesaman photographs during daylight hours, when the sun catches the tip of the leaves . New to her work is the use of brilliant color; whether working in color or black and white, these scenes of solitude invite the viewer to walk around, without any distractions or reservations.

미국출생. 사진가가 되기전에 수학선생님이었고, 늦은 33살에 사진을 시작하였다.쇠퇴적이고 산업적이지 않는 정원과 자연을 담기를 원했다고 한다.그녀의 흑백속에는 고독이 초대되여 그 주변을 걸어갈 관찰자를 원하는 것 같다.

팝과 재즈에 관해 ‘일가견을 가진’ 음악 애호가 무라카미 하루키는 그의 소설 제목이나 글 속에 자신이 좋아하는 노래 제목과 가사, 에피소드 등을 즐겨 인용하는 것으로 유명한데, 이로 인해 그에게는 ‘팝 문학’이라는 말도 따라 다닌다.

(하루키의 열렬한 팬으로, 다수의 하루키 책을 번역해 영어권에 소개한 하버드대 교수 제이 루빈은 '하루키 문학은 언어의 음악이다. Haruki Murakami And The Music Of Words라는 책을 내기도 했는데, 이 책은 '하루키는 아름다운 음악으로 글을 쓴다'라는 부제를 달고 있다)

음악 마니아인 하루키는 특히 비틀즈에 대해 각별한 애정을 가진 작가로 알려져 있다. 그의 대표작이자 가장 많이 팔려나간 것으로 집계되고 있는 상실의 시대의 원제목이 비틀즈의 노래 제목에서 따온 것이라는 사실은 널리 알려진 이야기다.

한국어판 제목인 상실의 시대의 일본판 원제목은 노르웨이의 숲으로, 이는 비틀즈의 유명한 노래 Norwegian wood(This Bird Has Flown) (1965)에서 빌어온 것이다.

Norwegian Wood는 비틀즈의 존 레논이 자신의 ‘혼외정사’ 경험을 소재로 하여 쓴 곡으로제목 본래의 뜻은 '노르웨이산 가구'이다. 그러나 많은 (비영어권의) 비틀즈 팬들은 오랫동안 이 제목의 뜻을 '노르웨이의 숲'으로 잘못 해석해 왔고, 하루키 역시 영어에 능통하였지만 이 오역에서 벗어나지 못한 것으로 추정된다.

또 이 노래의 내용은짐작과는 달리노래 속의화자(話者)가여인과 정사를 나누었던'집에 불을 지른다는' 섬뜩한 결말의노래이다.

아무튼 비틀즈를 굉장히 좋아했던 하루키는 70년대 젊은이들의 사랑과 방황과 우울을 그린 이 소설의 제목을 자신이 좋아하는 비틀즈의 노래 제목으로 정한 것이었다.
