Wynton Marsalis

1961년 10월 18일, 뉴올리언즈 태생이다. 그의 부친 엘리스 마살리스는 폭넓은 존경을 받고있는 작곡가이며 피아니스트이고 교육자이다. 윈튼은 소년시절 마을에서 마칭밴드(Marching Band), 재즈밴드(Jazz Band), 포크밴드(Folk Band), 클라식 오케스트라에서 폭넓은 경험을 쌓았다. 그의 재능은 놀라워서 이미 6살 때 알 허트 악단(Al Hirt)의 제 1 트럼피터 자리를 약속 받을 정도였다.

고교시절엔 뉴올리언즈의 사립(私立) 오케스트라에서 수석주자로 활동했고, 17세 때 탱글우드의 버크셔 음악센터 하계(夏季) 프로그램에 참가하였다. 18세 때 줄리어드 음악원에 입학했는데 여기서도 주목받는 학생이었다. 브로드웨이의 뮤지컬 악단에서 연주하고 브룩클린 필하모니와 협연도 했다.

19세 때 콜롬비아 레코드(현재의 Sony Classical)과 전속계약을 맺고 레코딩 아티스트로 데뷔한다. 지금까지 8개의 그래미상을 받았고, 10년간 23번이나 그래미상에 추천되는 놀라운 인기를 기록하였다. 특히 1983년에 클라식과 재즈 두개 부문에서 그래미상을 받았고, [최우수 독주자] [최우수 오케스트라 협연자]의 첫 번째 수상자가 되었다.

그의 데뷔 레코드는 1982년에 발표된 [마살리스의 초상] 이며, 매년 클라식과 재즈에서 1장씩의 음반을 발표하고 있다.

윈튼은 젊은 재즈 음악인을 돕는 일에 열심이고, 작곡에도 재능을 쏱고있다. 최근엔 발레 음악을 쓰고있는 것으로 전해진다. 윈트은 음악교육에 상당한 열정을 쏱고 있다. 수많은 워크샵과 해마다 열리는'마스터 클래스'를 통해서 학생들을 직접 가르치고 있다. 이러한 공로를 인정받아 미 하원으로부터 표창과 미국 전역의 여러 도시들로부터 행운의 열쇠를 수여받았으며,1995년 봄에는 예일대 프린스턴대,맨하튼 음대에서 명예학위를 받았다.

그의 연주는 우아하고 화려한 톤과 감각에만 의존하지 않고 지성적인 스타일을 견지함으로써 재즈의 열정과 실내악적인 면을 두루 포괄한다. 천재적 재능과 의욕으로 많은 양의 녹음과 공연을 통해서 일관된 플레이를 펼친다.

온기가 없고 소리가 다소 건조하다고 비판하는 비평가들도 있지만 강렬한 음색과 풍부한 음량, 완벽한 테크닉, 긴호흡 등은 단연 타의 추종을 불허할 정도의 완성도라는 평가를 듣고 있다. 이제는 중년의 나이에 접어들어 젊은 천재에서 원숙한 음악가로의 변신을 꾀하고 있다.

Wynton Marsalis

Wynton was born

in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1961,

to Dolores and Ellis Marsalis.

He was the second of six sons, one of whom is autistic.

Ellis, a music teacher,

was a longtime fixture on the New Orleans jazz scene,

and several of Wynton's brothers are also notable musicians;

saxophonist Branford Marsalis is probably as well known as Wynton.

At an early age,

Wynton exhibited seriousness about study, an aptitude for music

and a desire to contribute to American culture.

At age 8 he performed traditional New Orleans music

in the Fairview Baptist Church band

led by legendary banjoist, Danny Barker.

At 14 he was invited to perform with the New Orleans Philharmonic.

During high school

Wynton was a member of the New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet,

New Orleans Community Concert Band,

New Orleans Youth Orchestra,

New Orleans Symphony

and on weekends he performed in a jazz band

as well as in the popular local funk band, the Creators.

At age 17,

Marsalis became the youngest musician ever to be admitted to

Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center.

Despite his youth, he was awarded the school's prestigious

Harvey Shapiro Award for outstanding brass student.

When Wynton moved to New York City to attend the

Juilliard School of Music in 1978

and began to pick up gigs around town,

his talent garnered much attention.

Two years later (in 1980),

he joined the Jazz Messengers to study under

master drummer and bandleader, Art Blakey.

It was in Blakey's band that Marsalis learned the relationship

between jazz and democracy:

Blakey would often say, "No America, no jazz!"

It was from Blakey that Marsalis acquired his concept for bandleading

and for bringing intensity to each and every performance.

In the years to follow, Marsalis was invited to perform

with Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Edison,

Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, and many other jazz legends.
