Evelyn Glennie 는 1965년, 스콧틀랜드에서 태어났다. 어머니는 마을 교회의 오르가니스트였고, 그레니는 어려서부터 클라리넷과 하모니카를 즐겨 배웠다. 그러나 8살이 됐을 때 귀가 들리지 않는 불행을 당한다.

12살 때는 완전한 귀머거리가 된다.

이무렵 스네어 드럼을 배울 기회가 생겼고, 이것을 계기로 타악기연주자가 되기로 결심한다.

런던의 왕립음악원에 입학해서 확인해보니 이 학교가 설립된 이래 그 누구도 타악기연주가 되기 위해서 타악기를 전공으로 삼은 학생이 없었다는 사실을 알게 되었다.

1989년, 첫 음반을 녹음했고 그 음반으로 그레미상을 받았다. 그후 지금까지 12종의 음반을 발표했고, 타악기 전문 독주자로서는 세계 최초로 전세계를 연주여행하는 등 눈부신 활약을 펼치고 있다. 리사이틀과 콘서트 모두에서 그레니의 꾸준한 연주활동을 많은 사람들을 감동시켰고, 타악기로도 전문적인 연주생활이 가능하다는 새로운 가능성을 열었다.

그레니는 스스로 타악기를 디자인해서 판매하는 사업에서도 성공하고 있다.

그 가운데는 금속으로 만든 심벌스가 있는데 "그레니의 쓰레기(Glennie's Garbage)"라는 이름을 붙여서 판매하고 있다.

이 악기의 소리에 대해서 그레니는 "정말로 쓰레기 같은 소리"라고 설명하고 있다.

그런가하면 건설현장에서 사용하는 비계(발판)의 조각을 이용한 타악기도 만들고 있다.

이렇듯 그녀는 무슨 물건을 보면 그것으로 새로운 타악기를 만들 궁리를 하거나 두들겨 보는 게 습관이 됐다고 한다.

작곡가 장고 베이츠(Django Bates)는 "내가 꿈꾸는 부엌"이라는 곡명의 작품을 써서 헌정했는데, 그가 이런 표제를 붙인데는 평소 그레니의 습관을 작품에 연계한 아이디어였다. 이 작품에 동원되는 악기는 모두 주방용품들이다.

그레니는 타악기의 소리를 듣는다고 한다. 단, 자신의 방법으로 듣는다는 것이다.

전화 벨 소리가 그녀에게는 "탁 탁"하는 소리로 들리는데, 그렇게 탁탁하는 소리가 들리면 전화가 왔다는 것을 아는 것이다. 타악기의 소리로 이런 식의 그녀만의 해석으로 악기의 종류까지도 구분한다고 한다.

결과적으로 타악기를 연주하는데 그의 귀머거리 상태가 방해가 되지 않는 것이다.

▶그레니가 연주여행에 나서면 무려 2톤의 악기를 수송한다. 보통 사람들은 한,두개의 가방인데.
▶그레니의 취미는 그림 그리기, 칠하기, 고가구 가게를 기웃거리는 것이다.
▶그레니는 11년에 평균 110회의 연주회를 소화한다.
▶좋아하는 음식은 작은 빵, Earl Grey 홍차, 초콜릿이다.
▶그레니의 연주를 위해서 무대에 악기를 설치하는데 4시간이 소용되고,그것들을 다시 해체하는데는 2시간이 걸린다.
▶그레니는 ‘멋진 바이브레이션’ 이라는 제목의 자서전을 출판했다.
