마일스 데이비스는 『 Prestige 』를 떠난 후『 Columbia』와 계약을 체결하고 존 콜트레인, 레드 갈란드, 필리 조 존스 등과 퀸텟을 만들어 바로 이 앨범을 레코딩했다.

이 작품은 마일스 데이비스 개인에게 있어서나 재즈라는 거대한 음악 세계에 있어서나 여러모로 뜻깊은 계기를 마련해주었다고 볼 수 있다.

그런 점에서 『Columbia 』에서의 이 데뷔작은 곧 마일스 데이비스 의 시대를 예고하는 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
